I had a Mini Liquid Facelift and This is What Happened

I recently visited the office of Dr. Marina Peredo, a board certified dermatologist on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, to see if I was a candidate for Sculptra Aesthetic, the FDA-approved injectable that gradually helps replace lost collagen by stimulating your body’s natural collagen development process. Frankly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I think I look pretty youthful and I don’t have a lot of wrinkles, but there is just something about my mid-face area, that I can’t quite put my finger on, that is starting to show the visible signs of aging.

Upon arriving at Dr. Peredo’s office, her nurse took several photos of my face from all angles. She then handed me a large tablet with the face forward image showing and asked my to mark the areas that bothered me. It seemed much easier to identify the areas for improvement in an image of myself versus looking in the mirror. I marked the hollow looking areas between my cheeks and ears and also the asymmetry in my lower face. Frankly, I didn’t think there was anything that could be done about the asymmetry (no one’s face is perfectly symmetrical). But hey, it bothered me so why not point it out? It is the reason that I almost never pose for a photo fully face forward. Possibly imperceptible to others, but a source of insecurity for me.

A photo from a few months ago that shows the asymmetry when I’m smiling.

After reviewing the my photos with her nurse, Dr. Peredo then entered the examination room and again asked me to talk to her about my areas of concern. She then stepped back and carefully assessed my entire face (not just the areas I had marked) and gave her treatment recommendations. She said that Sculptra Aesthetic would indeed help improve the hollow areas towards the sides of my face. She also recommended Dysport, an injectable that helps improve the look of frown lines between the eyebrows. I have often been told that my glabellar muscles are super strong and “expressive”.  In fact, some other injectables don’t always effectively treat mine. So, I was happy to hear that there might be a better solution.

The nurse then, thankfully, applied a generous amount of numbing cream. After the numbing cream had time to take effect, Dr. Peredo re-entered and started carefully injecting each of the areas we discussed. She put several injections of Sculptra Aesthetic, of varied amounts addressing the area in front of ears, my smile lines, etc. She then treated the area in between my brows with Dysport. Although, I wouldn’t see the full effects of both for days (2-3 days for Dysport and weeks for Sculptura Aesthetic), there was noticeable immediate improvement. The biggest thing I noticed is that my slightly crooked smile which had always bothered me, was suddenly even.

Immediately after the injections.

After the treatment, I carried on with my regular activities, even going to a very fun poolside party, and no one was the wiser. The next day there was a bit of swelling – that no one, other than me, noticed. I also noticed that my mouth could not open quite as wide as usual (maybe good news to my family?), likely due to the minor swelling, but that too was gone by 36 hours post-treatment. I am super happy with my results to date, the Dysport has tamed my frown lines and I already feel like my face looks softer (less angular) and more symmetrical due to the initial Sculptra Aesthetic injections.

Sculptra Aesthetic results are typically visible during the course of 3-4 months (usually 3 injections are done during this period). I have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Peredo in a month or so to see my progress and assess whether I need additional injections.  Stay tuned for more photos of my results!
