Ageist Beauty Out & About: RoC Skincare Launch Event

Last week, I attended a launch event for RoC Skincare’s RETINOL CORREXION MAX Daily Hydration Crème. The new creme combines retinol, widely acknowledged as the gold standard for reducing the visible signs of aging, with a deep hydrating moisturizer. Retinol can be irritating and drying for some, but this creme provides hydration for 24 hours and makes skin feel smooth and moisturized immediately upon application. It’s clinically proven to make skin smoother and more radiant after just one week. After just 4 weeks, undereye wrinkles and fine lines are less visible. At 8 weeks, deep wrinkles and dark spots are visibly reduced.

Dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Hale interviews Thandie Newton

During the event, we had the opportunity participate in an engaging discussion about aging and the expectations that society places on women. Dr. Elizabeth Hale added her insights from her NYC dermatology practice and also posed questions to actress Thandie Newton on her experience as a woman over 40 in Hollywood.

Women are expected to act “age appropriate”, but look younger than we are. While men tend to be complimented as they grow older and told they look “distinguished”, women are often criticized for the signs of aging. When women are complimented, there are often qualifiers attached like – “You look good…for your age”. In fact, 82% of women over 40 that were surveyed* were told that they had received this backhanded compliment in the last year. Some hearing at as often as once every 6 weeks. Dr. Hale and Thandie shared their own stories of receiving compliments with similar qualifiers in both the workplace and in their personal lives. Thandie also shared her thoughts on how mothers, in particular, are even more marginalized by society, as they age.

Has anyone ever given you this back-handed compliment?

Thandie Newton, a mother of 3, was warm and seemed very genuine as she shared her experiences as a woman of a certain age in Hollywood.

After the event, I felt inspired by the conversation that is being started with the #ForYourAge campaign. We should all walk confidently through life knowing that we are beautiful in our own unique way. It’s time for society to embrace the beauty in all women – regardless of age.

These props were just begging for some photos to be taken.

RoC Skincare RETINOL CORREXION MAX Daily Hydration Crème will be available in January 2018 and will retail for $28.99.
