Self-Care Saturday: The Red Door Spa at The Chatwal Hotel

This week has been absolutely draining. Between the horrific tragedy that took place in Las Vegas, an overwhelming workload and the typical responsibilities of being a wife and mom, I was feeling overdue for some focused self-care. For me, that almost always includes a spa treatment. Yesterday, I went to the Red Door Salon & Spa at The Chatwal Hotel in Manhattan for their 50-minute Spa Week De-Stress Body Treatment.

As I entered the serene spa, which is on one of the lower levels of The Chatwal, I forgot about the tangle of taxis, tourists and Broadway show-goers that were just steps away at street-level. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the guest service manager, Supriya, who took me to a small, but very comfortable waiting area so I could complete a short health questionnaire prior to my treatment.

Supriya offered me a choice of water or tea before taking me to my private changing area. Each changing room has its own double shower, sink and toilet – as well as Red Door Spa hair and body products for guests to use while at the spa. I instantly had visions of lingering during a long shower following my treatment.

Since I had arrived early for my treatment, I took time to enjoy the plunge pool and sauna area beforehand. The pool and sauna area was small, but was unoccupied while I was there, so it felt like my own private oasis. I didn’t have a swimsuit with me, so I just soaked my feet in the cool waters of the pool.

The spa’s plunge pool

After leaving the plunge pool, I returned to the waiting area where I was greeted by my massage therapist, Mary. Before getting started, Mary asked if I had any special areas of concern and described the treatment in detail, as well as the products that would be used.

The treatment room where my magical transformation took place.

The 50-minute treatment that I had is an abbreviated version of the spa’s Signature Stress Melter Ritual treatment. It started with dry brushing to remove dead skin cells and help the products used penetrate the skin more easily. Mary then applied and massaged in a rich body cream that melted into a super hydrating oil. I was then wrapped like a cocoon (a very comfortable and moisturizing cocoon). While the Cabernet and Neroli oil and wrap-induced moisture penetrated my skin, I was given a scalp massage. With a lavender relaxation mask over my eyes and a heated pillow beneath my neck, I’m pretty sure that I drifted off to sleep.

The magic cream that transformed my body from a dry, bundle of stress into one that is glowing, smooth and relaxed.

After Mary un-tucked me from my cocoon she soothingly whispered these dreaded words, “It’s recommended that you don’t shower until later tonight or tomorrow to allow your skin to get the full benefits of the minerals and antioxidants in the body cream”. I was momentarily horror-stricken at the thought of forgoing that indulgent, un-rushed shower I had visualized since the moment I stepped into my private changing area. Then, I felt how incredibly soft, smooth and well-hydrated my skin felt and I didn’t want to take a shower yet, for fear of washing away that incredible, blissful feeling of baby soft skin. I’m already planning to return to celebrate my birthday. What better way to celebrate another year, than by having a treatment that makes you feel as if you’ve turned back the hands of time!

FYI, the Red Door Spa at The Chatwal Hotel is one of the spas that is participating in Spa Week (October 16 -22). Make your appointment now and experience the same treatment I had for just $50!
