Over the past few years the use of fillers and Botox has become very commonplace. Fillers are now used for rejuvenate many areas of the face that once required something much more invasive. However, for some patients, fillers may not always be the best option. For patients with “atrophic” (thinned) lips, a lip lift procedure may be a better option. For patients where the skin in the upper lip has thinned, the collagen structures are waning and the muscles have started atrophy – fillers won’t be effective. This is often the case with women in their 50’s and beyond.
We spoke with Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, a preeminent New York City Facial Plastic Surgeon specializing in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to learn more about the procedure. According to Dr. Slupchynskyj, “Fillers add excessive volume to atrophic lips rather than recreate the true symmetry and proportions of the lip.” Fillers are not a natural remedy for genetically thin lips. Adds Dr. Slupchynskj, “Fillers can’t recreate what you never had –the pink vermillion.”
The lip lift procedure takes approximately one hour. During the procedure, a lateral incision is made on the inside of the mouth just above where the vermillion, the pink part of lip, continues to the interior. The cosmetic surgeon advances this hidden part of the lip forward, adding it to the visible vermillion seen on the face. A subdermal suture is used, as well as surface dissolvable sutures. The skill with which the surgeon does the closure is key to ensuring an optimal result. There is minimal swelling afterwards for 3-5 days, but no bruising. Patients can resume normal activities after 5-6 days.
The cost of the procedure is approximately $4,500.
For those Ageist Beauties with less-endowed lips, would you consider a surgical procedure to enhance the way your lips look?
