Ageist Beauty’s Sunscreen Roundup

Everyone knows that using sunscreen is important whether you are lounging in the sun during summer vacation or just running errands on an overcast day. However, whether you use it daily (as you should) is often another story.

If you need to be further reminded of the negative effects of sun damage, check out this photo of a 69 year-old career truck driver. The damage to the left side of his face which bore the brunt of the sun exposure while in his truck is clearly much more pronounced than the right side. This is a dramatic example, but there are so many really good sunscreens out now there is really no excuse to not protect your skin. Below are some of our favorite sunscreens that we slather on to protect our skin from sun damage and delay the appearance of those dreaded wrinkles and age spots.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 100+ - this is one of the best body sunscreens we’ve ever used. It is super sheer and light, non-greasy and waterproof. It’s also broad-spectrum, meaning is protects against UVA (the rays that are around all year-round and can go through glass, etc.) and UVB rays (the ones that are typically responsible for sunburn). This sunscreen is the perfect choice for getting those hard to reach areas.

Olay Professional Pro-X Age Repair Lotion w/SPF 30We love a good multi-tasking product!  Olay’s Pro-X Age Repair Lotion combines UVA and UVB protection with anti-aging ingredients Niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin A for a product that not only helps to prevent sun damage, but also lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

EXTRASHADE Daily Defense Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30  – Contrary to popular belief, those with extra melanin are not immune to sun damage and in fact are even more susceptible to skin discoloration. We love this new sunscreen for those with brown skin (olive to dark brown and all shades in between). It is infused with botanicals, vitamins and antioxidants to protect and soothe skin, but free of  fragrance, alcohol, dye, lanolin or propylene glycol which can contribute to uneven skintone.   It also doesn’t leave the telltale signs of chalkiness that many sunscreens leave on brown skin.

La Roche Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Sunscreen with Mexoryl, SPF 15 - Anthelios SX is an old favorite. I use this moisturizer with SPF 15 nearly every day to hydrate the skin on my face and protect from UVA rays. It is lightweight, is absorbed into my skin quickly and also acts as a great base for my tinted moisturizer.
