During NYFW, I had the opportunity to attend the Samantha Black runway show. Admittedly, I wasn’t familiar with the designer’s work, but was excited to see what makeup look the super-talented Valente Frazier had created for the show. Samantha Black is one of the two designers whose NYFW shows were sponsored by IMAN Cosmetics. I love the fact that the brand is supporting young, talented designers that are women of color.
The collection and the makeup look were inspired by early royalty, with a nod to the confident, modern woman. As I saw at other shows during NYFW Fall 2012, the makeup look included flawless, fresh skin – with minimal Cover Cream concealer used as needed. A bit of Clay Bronzer was dusted along the hairline to give the models a luminescent glow and also used as a contour.
The focus of the look was the smokey, dramatic midnight blue eye. However, in this case it was a reverse smokey-eye of sorts. I’m a huge fan of dark blue eye makeup. I think it is much more rich and luxurious than it’s cousin, black. The smoked part of the eye was just under the lower lash line and smudged for full-on glamour. To achieve the effect, the waterline of the eye was lined with Jet Black Liner and then Enigma Blue eyeshadow was applied on top of the liner for a bold look. The upper eyelid featured gold and brown tones. To keep the focus on the eyes, the models lips were nearly devoid of color. The lips were blotted with Cover Cream concealer and then lined with Tan liner. The lips were finished with a cream base and dab of peach in the middle of the lip for a matte, almost nude look with added dimension.
