We have a new feature to share with you, our Ageist Beauties. It is called Beauty Bits. Beauty Bits are short interviews with beauty experts, insiders and fellow ageist beauties. Through Beauty Bits, we hope to share personal, insider knowledge to help you reveal an even more fabulous you.
We are kicking off Beauty Bits in a huge way. First up is Dickey! Dickey is a celebrity hairstylist and the founder of the revolutionary Hair Rules product line and the Hair Rules Salon in New York City. Dubbed the “texture guru”, he has transformed the hair care industry with his innovative texture based approach. Dickey’s mission during his 20-year career as a hairstylist has been to undo years of despair and disappointment suffered by women everywhere by helping them to re-discover their natural texture, embrace the versatility it offers, and wear it however they choose – but via healthy, responsible methods, regardless of ethnicity.
Ageist Beauty: What is the biggest complaint you hear from women about their hair as they age?
Dickey: Probably that their hair has become drier, dull and thinner as they have gotten older.
AB: What are your recommendations to keep hair healthy and shiny during the dry, winter months?
D: I tell all of my clients to avoid shampoos that have suds. Instead, they should use a non-sudsing type of cleanser that will gently clean their scalp and hair without stripping their hair of essential moisture and shine.
AB: Should you change how frequently you wash your hair when the weather is cold?
D: Washing your hair less in the winter months is key to not drying your hair out. In drier weather (whether it’s cold or not), you can simply cleanse with conditioner and skip the shampoo which can further dry your hair and scalp.
AB: I recommend a multi-step skincare regimen including cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. What is your recommended haircare regimen?
D: I recommend a non-sudsing shampoo, a thick, rich conditioner and a leave-in conditioner or styling cream to help hydrate and protect the hair, especially dry ends. The Hair Rules product line has products to address every step of this regimen and for any texture of hair.
AB: If there is one piece of advice on hair care that you can give Ageist Beauty readers, what would it be?
D: The most important advice your readers should follow to achieve and maintain healthy hair is to avoid shampoos that suds. In the past, we have put too much stock in traditional shampoos that suds and did nothing more than leave hair dry, frizzy and dull. Whether your hair is natural or relaxed, those traditional shampoos are the culprit in the very thing that women of all ages and textures fight against – old, dull hair with no shine. Instead, only use creamy, non-sudsing shampoos like Hair Rules Daily Cleansing Cream or Wen Cleansing Conditioner.
